Retail store design is much more than just decorating a space; it’s the tool that turns a visitor into a customer. A well-designed store organizes foot traffic, optimizes lighting, and reinforces your brand identity so that everyone who walks in has an experience that invites them to stay and shop. In this guide, we’ll cover the key elements of retail interior design—from layout and furniture to decor—and how to adapt them to your industry to get the most out of your store.

What is commercial design?

It is the process of planning and organizing a space intended for the sale of products or services so that it is functional, attractive, and profitable. It combines elements of architecture, interior design, marketing, and customer experience.

Interior design for retail stores

A store’s interior design directly influences customers’ perception of the brand; a well-organized space conveys confidence, facilitates purchases, and increases the amount of time customers spend inside the store.

Distribution and circulation

The layout of the space should naturally guide customers through the different areas of the store. It is important to create comfortable pathways, avoid narrow aisles, and place products strategically in highly visible locations.

It is important to clearly differentiate between the display, checkout, promotional, and customer service areas, promoting smooth traffic flow that prevents crowding.

Lighting and ambience

Lighting is one of the elements that has a major impact on the shopping experience; the right combination of general lighting, accent lighting, and decorative lighting helps highlight products, create different atmospheres, and reinforce the business’s personality.

There are other factors—such as temperature, background music, and even the store’s scent—that help create an experience consistent with the brand.

Furniture and storefront

Furniture should be functional, durable, and adaptable to the business’s needs; shelves, display units, counters, and display cases should facilitate both product display and customer comfort.

The storefront is the first point of contact with the public; an attractive, up-to-date design that aligns with the brand’s identity can make the difference between capturing attention and going unnoticed among the competition.

Interior design for commercial spaces

Decor adds personality to a space and helps set a business apart from the competition. This isn’t about filling the space with decorative items, but rather about creating a cohesive environment that aligns with the brand and the profile of the business’s target customers.

Color, materials, and textures

The choice of colors influences emotions and the perception of space; light tones create a sense of spaciousness, while more intense colors can be used to highlight specific areas.

Materials and textures also play an important role: wood conveys warmth, metal adds a contemporary style, and glass helps create a sense of spaciousness and brightness.

Brand identity in space

Every detail of the space should reflect the business’s personality; from the logo to the finishes, including the furniture and lighting, all elements should follow the same aesthetic.

Municipal deadlines and fees

Processing times depend on the city council and the type of construction project.

Permits for minor construction projects are typically processed within a few days or weeks, while permits for major construction projects can take several months due to technical and urban planning reviews.

It is also necessary to pay municipal fees and taxes associated with the project.

Retail store interior design by sector

Every business has different needs; tailoring the design to the type of business helps improve both the customer experience and the day-to-day operations of the space.

Fashion

In fashion stores, it is essential to create comfortable shopping paths, provide lighting that enhances the appearance of fabrics, and offer comfortable fitting rooms. The furniture, colors, and lighting should make it easy to update collections and highlight new arrivals or seasonal promotions.

Food

Food stores require a clear layout that facilitates quick and orderly shopping. It is important to ensure proper lighting for fresh products, maintain proper hygiene, and design shopping paths that encourage impulse purchases without hindering customer flow.

Home and decor

In this type of store, it is particularly effective to recreate complete settings that help customers visualize how the products will look in their own homes.

The combination of different heights, materials, and decorative elements helps create inspiring spaces that encourage cross-selling.

Common mistakes when designing your store

Even a store with an excellent location can miss out on sales opportunities if its design doesn’t meet customer needs. Here are some of the most common mistakes:

Overcrowding the space with too much furniture or merchandise.

Neglecting general lighting and accent lighting.

Failing to define a clear customer flow.

Designing a storefront that’s unattractive or not updated frequently.

A well-planned retail design project strikes a balance between aesthetics, functionality, and strategy. The result is a space that enhances the customer experience, reinforces the brand image, and helps increase sales.

Renovating a commercial space is one of the decisions that most significantly impacts your brand’s image, your customers’ experience, and your business’s profitability. Knowing how to renovate a commercial space isn’t just about the construction work—it involves organizing your goals, budget, timeline, and design to renovate the space without disrupting business operations. In this practical guide, designed for business owners and managers, you’ll find a step-by-step guide to tackling commercial space renovations—from the initial decision to custom furniture—while avoiding the most common mistakes and cost overruns.

Where to start before renovating

Before beginning any construction or renovation work on the premises, it’s a good idea to assess what the business really needs; good planning can minimize unforeseen issues and allows you to make decisions with a comprehensive view of the project

Define the business objectives

Every renovation must address a specific need; updating a store’s image is not the same as bringing a restaurant into compliance with new regulations or reconfiguring a space to improve customer flow.

Before you begin, answer questions such as:

Do you want to increase the venue’s capacity?

Are you looking to strengthen your brand identity?

Do you need to adapt the space to accommodate new services or processes?

Assess the condition of the premises

A technical assessment of the space helps avoid surprises during construction.

Checking the electrical systems, plumbing, HVAC, structure, insulation, accessibility, and the overall condition of the finishes are some of the things that should be reviewed before starting.

This assessment allows you to identify any required repairs before investing in aesthetic elements and helps you prepare a more accurate budget.

Estimate for renovating a commercial space

The budget is one of the factors that most influences a renovation; properly planning each line item prevents significant deviations and facilitates financial control of the project.

What you should plan for

In addition to the construction work itself, a commercial renovation typically includes various aspects that must be considered from the outset; while these will depend on the scope of the project, the most common ones are:

Demolition and masonry, if space needs to be reconfigured.

Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and ventilation systems.

Carpentry and enclosures, such as doors, storefronts, and interior partitions.

Cladding and finishes, including flooring, painting, and ceilings.

Custom furniture and equipment, tailored to the business’s needs.

Interior design and brand identity, to create a functional and cohesive space.

Licenses and permits, as well as technical project management when necessary.

How to avoid cost overruns

Cost overruns typically occur when the project changes after construction has begun or when the scope is not clearly defined.

To minimize this risk, it is important to thoroughly define the project before starting, coordinate effectively with all teams involved in the project, and request detailed estimates for each line item.

How to renovate your business premises without closing

In many businesses, halting operations results in a significant loss of revenue; therefore, it is becoming increasingly common to plan renovations that allow the business to remain open, at least partially.

Plan the construction schedule

Organizing the schedule is essential; dividing the renovation into phases allows work to be carried out in certain areas while others remain operational.

It is advisable to schedule the most disruptive work during periods of lower activity, holidays, or days when the facility is closed. Detailed planning reduces downtime and facilitates coordination between contractors and construction crews.

Reduce the impact on your business

In addition to properly organizing the phases, there are various measures that can be taken to minimize disruption, such as conducting work at night whenever possible and posting signs to indicate which areas will be under construction. Other very important aspects include protecting existing furniture, keeping customers and employees safe, and providing advance notice of any changes to access or operations.

Materials and finishes for commercial use

The materials used in a commercial space must combine aesthetics, durability, and ease of maintenance; choosing based solely on visual criteria can increase maintenance costs in the medium term.

Durability and maintenance

Commercial spaces are subject to more intensive use than residential spaces, so it’s important to choose materials that can withstand heavy foot traffic, are easy to clean, and are designed for ongoing maintenance. Investing in high-quality furniture reduces the need for future repairs and helps keep the space in good condition for longer.

Finishes that strengthen your brand

Every design decision communicates the company’s values; colors, textures, lighting, and materials must align with the brand identity to create a cohesive experience.

A premium retail store, for example, will require finishes that are very different from those of a fast-paced retail outlet or an industrial space.

Interior design and custom furniture

Interior design is one of the elements that has the greatest impact on the customer experience; a well-executed interior design project not only enhances the aesthetics of the space but also optimizes traffic flow, improves product display, and increases the space’s functionality.

Custom-made furniture adds unique value; it allows you to make the most of every square meter, integrate utilities, maintain a consistent look, and fully adapt to the business’s needs.

Renovating a commercial space isn’t just a matter of construction—it’s also about planning. Clearly defining your goals from the start, assessing the actual condition of the space, and forecasting every budget line item is what makes the difference between a well-managed renovation and one riddled with cost overruns and unforeseen issues. Added to this is effective scheduling, which allows the space to be renovated without completely halting business operations, and a careful selection of materials and finishes designed both to reinforce the brand identity and to withstand intensive daily use.

When all these elements are coordinated within a single project, the result is a more functional space that is consistent with the brand and designed to enhance the customer experience and the business’s profitability. At Grupo Malasa, we support each of these phases with our architecture and design services, ensuring your renovation proceeds smoothly and delivers the highest-quality final result.

What are building permits?

Building permits are administrative authorizations that must be obtained from the relevant city council in order to legally carry out construction or renovation work.

These permits ensure that the work complies with current urban planning, safety, accessibility, and habitability regulations. Without this authorization, any work performed on commercial premises could be considered illegal and subject to penalties.

When are they required?

Building permits are required when the work may affect the safety, structure, or exterior appearance of the building, or compliance with zoning regulations; they are also typically required for major renovations, additions, or demolitions.

Types of building permits

There are different types of building permits, depending on the size, location, or purpose of the project. Below, we explain the basic types: major building permits and minor building permits.

Major construction permit

Construction of new buildings or premises.

Building expansions.

Comprehensive renovations of commercial premises.

Structural modifications (such as the removal of load-bearing walls).

Work that alters facades, roofs, or common areas.

Minor construction permit

A minor construction permit is required for simple renovations that do not affect the structure or safety of the building.

It is typically required for projects such as:

Painting of homes or commercial spaces.

Replacement of flooring, tiles, or wall coverings.

Renovating bathrooms or kitchens without structural changes

Replacement of doors or windows

Plumbing or electrical repairs.

Prior notice of construction work

Prior notification is an administrative procedure used to inform the city council of the intention to carry out minor construction work that, in many cases, does not require a full permit.

In many municipalities, this procedure replaces the formal permit for simple projects that have no significant structural or urban planning impact. It allows construction to begin after submitting the required documentation, provided that the requirements established by municipal regulations are met.

Building permit requirements

To obtain a building permit, you must submit an application to the city council along with the necessary documentation to verify that the construction project complies with urban planning and safety regulations.

Required documentation

It typically includes the official application from the city council, the owner’s information, and details identifying the property where the work will be carried out.

Depending on the type of construction, a technical proposal may also be required, including plans, a descriptive report, and a budget prepared by a qualified professional.

Proof of payment of municipal fees and taxes is usually submitted, along with other documents related to construction safety and waste management. In some cases, additional permits may be required, especially if the building is located in protected areas or affects common elements.

How to apply for building permits

To apply for building permits, you must submit an application to the relevant city council along with the documentation required for the type of project.

This typically includes the owner’s information, a description of the work, a budget, and—for major projects—a technical plan prepared by a qualified professional.

After submitting the documentation and paying the applicable municipal fees and taxes, the city council reviews the project to ensure it complies with urban planning and safety regulations. If everything is in order, it grants the permit or authorizes the prior notification, allowing the work to begin legally.

Steps to take at city hall

Submit the application and the required documentation.

Pay municipal fees and taxes.

Wait for the city council’s technical and zoning review.

Obtain the license or authorization.

Begin construction within the established timeframe.

Common mistakes to avoid

When it comes to building permits, some common mistakes include starting construction without the required permits, or submitting documentation that is incomplete or contains incorrect information, as this can delay the processing of the application.

Other common mistakes include performing work that differs from or exceeds what was authorized under the permit, which could result in penalties from the city government.

What Is Commercial Architectural Planning?

Commercial architectural planning is the strategic process of organizing and designing spaces intended for commercial activities, ensuring that the design is functional, efficient, and visually appealing.

This type of planning is applied to projects such as stores, restaurants, hotels, and other retail or leisure spaces. Each commercial architecture project is developed on a case-by-case basis, depending on the business model, the client’s profile, and the location of the premises. Proper planning allows for optimizing the investment and ensuring that the space meets commercial objectives.

Why Plan Before You Start

Architectural planning is essential before construction begins, as it not only improves the architectural outcome but also enhances business efficiency, reduces risks, and ensures that the space functions properly from the start.

Another important consideration is a thorough review of legal, safety, and accessibility regulations; depending on the nature of the project, different requirements may apply.

Differences Between New Construction and Commercial Renovation

Renovating a commercial space, on the other hand, involves adapting or transforming an existing space to suit a new use or improve its current conditions. This type of project requires a more detailed technical analysis to integrate the existing structure with the new architectural design.

Step-by-Step Stages of an Architectural Project

An architectural project is carried out in several stages, beginning with the analysis phase—during which the client’s needs are assessed—and ending with the delivery of the completed project.

Requirements Gathering and Space Analysis

This is the first step in the planning process, during which we examine the proposed space, the available budget, and the urban planning and technical regulations that could affect the project.

The goal of this analysis is to understand what the client wants and what is feasible.

Preliminary Draft and Conceptual Proposal

This is where the initial design ideas are developed, and floor plans and sketches of the basic layouts are created to define what the space will look like. It’s a way to get a general sense of the space.

Preliminary and Construction Design

Once the previous step has been finalized, we move on to this one, in which the final layout, access points, overall aesthetics, and compliance with regulations are defined. This phase is very important, as it involves the creation of technical drawings, details, and measurements.

This serves as a documentary foundation that will guide the entire construction process.

Processing of Licenses and Permits

Before beginning construction, it is essential to obtain the necessary licenses and permits in accordance with the nature of the business and local regulations.

This phase is critical to avoiding delays and ensuring that the project complies with administrative and legal requirements.

Construction Phase and Monitoring

This stage involves the physical construction of the space, with various professionals—such as architects and other technical staff—overseeing the work. Specific adjustments are also made if unforeseen issues arise during construction.

Handover and Commissioning of the Space

Once the work is completed, a final inspection of the project is conducted to ensure that everything is in accordance with the plans; at this stage, the final drawings, certificates, and technical documentation are delivered.

Project Phases for Commercial Spaces

Commercial space projects follow a structured process designed to ensure that the space is functional, profitable, and tailored to the business, although this process may vary depending on the type of space and applicable regulations.

Specific Features by Business Type

Retail: The priority is to optimize product display and the customer journey. Spaces are designed to facilitate smooth traffic flow and encourage purchases.

Restaurants: Operational efficiency is combined with the customer experience, with careful attention paid to layout, lighting, and compliance with health regulations.

Hostptality: The goal is to balance functionality and the guest experience, carefully considering the flow between public and private areas.

How Deadlines Affect Business Operations

Construction timelines have a direct impact, as they determine when a business can begin operations, generate revenue, or maintain normal operations.

Any delays are not only a construction issue but also have economic and strategic implications.

Proper planning reduces risks and allows for the opening of the premises to be coordinated with the business strategy.

Keys to Successful Architectural Planning

Successful planning begins with a clear definition of business objectives. The design must be tailored to the actual use of the space, making the most of every square foot.

It is essential to balance aesthetics, technical feasibility, and budget while ensuring compliance with regulations. Furthermore, coordination among architects, builders, and other professionals ensures efficient project execution and a high-quality outcome.

Effective planning begins with defining business objectives and the requirements of the available space. From the earliest stages, it is important to analyze functionality, the available budget, and any technical or regulatory constraints that may affect the project.

The design must make the most of every square meter, combining aesthetics and efficiency to create attractive, comfortable spaces tailored to their actual use. Effective coordination among architects, engineers, builders, and other professionals ensures that all phases of the project proceed in an orderly and efficient manner.

Decarbonization in the building sector has become one of the main challenges facing the real estate and construction industries. Reducing CO₂ emissions throughout the life cycle of buildings—from construction through to use—is key to meeting regulatory requirements and European climate goals.

The building sector is responsible for high energy consumption and a significant portion of greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, the transition toward more efficient and sustainable buildings involves reducing energy demand, opting for low-carbon materials, and incorporating high-efficiency systems and renewable energy.

In this context, the Technical Building Code (CTE) stands as a key tool for driving this transformation and moving toward nearly zero-energy buildings, in line with the climate neutrality goals set for 2050.

Impact of the Technical Code on the Decarbonization of Assets

The Technical Building Code (CTE) is key to the decarbonization of real estate assets in Spain, as it lays the groundwork for improving energy efficiency in buildings and complying with current regulations.

Through requirements for energy efficiency and energy savings, the CTE has helped reduce energy consumption and emissions in buildings, particularly through improvements in insulation, building systems, and the use of renewable energy.

It has also promoted the adoption of technologies such as solar photovoltaic and thermal energy, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and lowering CO₂ emissions associated with building operations.

Thermal Bridge Mitigation and Thermal Envelope

The building envelope consists of all the elements that separate the interior from the exterior, such as facades, roofs, floors, openings, and windows and doors, and its primary function is to reduce heat loss and gain in order to maintain comfortable conditions with minimal energy consumption.

Thermal bridges are areas where greater heat transfer occurs due to structural discontinuities or changes in materials. These points cause energy loss and increase the demand for heating and cooling.

High-efficiency systems: geothermal energy and renewable energy

High-efficiency systems play a key role in decarbonizing buildings and reducing energy consumption. The goal is to replace fossil fuel systems with more efficient and sustainable technologies capable of providing heating, cooling, and hot water with a lower environmental impact.

Aerothermal energy harnesses the energy contained in the outside air using high-efficiency heat pumps. This technology is capable of generating more thermal energy than it consumes.

Meanwhile, renewable energy sources, particularly solar photovoltaic and solar thermal energy, enable the production of clean energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Solar photovoltaic energy generates electricity for self-consumption, while solar thermal energy is used for domestic hot water production.

Selection of Low-Carbon Building Materials

The selection of materials is a crucial aspect, as it aims to reduce emissions generated during the manufacturing, transportation, and use of building materials.

Traditional materials such as cement and steel have a significant environmental impact; currently, the use of sustainable building materials—such as certified wood, recycled materials, and natural insulation—is being promoted.

Tools such as Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) are used to evaluate their environmental impact.

This strategy is essential for making progress toward the climate neutrality goals promoted by the European Union for 2050.

The future of construction lies in decarbonization

The combination of technology, energy retrofits, and sustainability criteria is transforming the real estate sector toward nearly zero-energy buildings that are prepared for a climate-neutral future.

Sustainable buildings are gaining greater value in the market due to their ability to adapt to new regulatory requirements, reduce risks associated with energy consumption, and offer better living conditions.

All of this reflects our commitment to more responsible construction. We invite you to learn more about our approach to sustainability and some of our projects projects on our website.

Custom-made hotel furniture has become a strategic element within the hospitality industry. It is not just about creating visually appealing spaces, but also about developing functional, durable, and cost-effective solutions capable of withstanding heavy use for years.

The planning of hotel furnishings directly influences the guest experience, maintenance costs, and the establishment’s operational profitability. A poorly conceived design can lead to premature replacements, constant issues, and hidden costs associated with wear and tear, while a well-executed technical project optimizes resources and extends the furniture’s lifespan.

Industrial design applied to custom hotel furnishings

In contract projects, design cannot be limited to visual considerations; it must also take into account other factors such as ergonomics, structural strength, ease of maintenance, and logistical optimization.

When selecting furniture for hotels, it is essential to first assess how each piece will be used. Furniture for a standard guest room does not require the same features as that for common areas, restaurants, reception areas, or outdoor spaces.

Contract furniture for hotels allows you to:

Greater resistance to wear and tear and continuous use.

Efficient use of available space.

Aesthetic consistency in guest rooms and common areas.

Enhancing the guest experience through functional and comfortable designs.

Precision Carpentry: Precision in Manufacturing and Assembly

Technical joinery for hotels is one of the cornerstones of custom hotel furniture manufacturing. Its role goes far beyond traditional carpentry work.

In large-scale hotel projects, even small dimensional deviations can compound and lead to significant operational problems. For this reason, technical manufacturing requires rigorous quality control protocols at every stage of the project.

The use of automated machinery ensures consistent finishes, optimizes production times, and reduces human error. Additionally, modular prefabrication facilitates on-site installation, shortening completion times and minimizing interference with other project components.

Selection of materials and finishes for heavy-duty commercial use

The choice of materials is one of the most important factors in ensuring the durability of hotel furniture. Furniture must withstand impacts, frequent cleaning, humidity, temperature fluctuations, and high user turnover.

Selecting materials based solely on aesthetic criteria often results in higher maintenance and replacement costs in the medium term.

Among the most commonly used materials in technical woodworking for hotels are:

High-density engineered panels.

Phenolic compacts.

High-performance HPL laminates.

Stabilized engineered wood.

Treated metal structures.

Antibacterial and scratch-resistant surfaces.

The right combination of design, structure, and materials significantly extends the lifespan of the furniture, reducing the need for replacements and improving the return on investment.

Cost Optimization in Hotel Furniture Through Preliminary Design

Custom forniture doesn’t necessarily mean building every piece from scratch. One of the most efficient approaches is to combine customization with modular systems.

Modules allow you to:

Reduce manufacturing costs by reusing components

Simplify on-site assembly and installation

Replace specific parts without having to replace the entire assembly

It is an effective strategy for optimizing costs. Designing standardized parts that can be adapted to different configurations helps reduce the number of part numbers, streamline production, and facilitate future restocking.

Summary of Key Technical Considerations for Hotel Furniture

Hotel furniture design requires a balanced combination of design, functionality, durability, and cost-effectiveness. The key to developing efficient contract projects lies in adopting a comprehensive technical approach.

Applying industrial design principles helps optimize manufacturing, installation, and maintenance. Technical joinery for hotels ensures precision and structural reliability, while the proper selection of materials guarantees adequate performance under intensive use.

In an industry like the hotel sector, investing in well-designed contract furniture solutions not only enhances the guest experience but also directly contributes to the business’s long-term profitability and sustainability. At Grupo Malasa, we’ve been in the industry for over 30 years and are suppliers of hotel furniture; you can view our hospitality sector projects.

PEFC and FSC certification are the leading international sustainable forest certification systems. Both ensure that wood and other forest products come from forests managed responsibly and in accordance with environmental, social, and economic criteria.

Below, we outline the key differences between PEFC and FSC certification, their technical requirements, and the benefits each offers for sustainable forest management.

Differences between PEFC and FSC Certification

Both certifications share a common goal: to ensure that forest products come from sustainably managed forests. However, they differ in their approach, structure, and standards.

FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification began as an international, voluntary initiative that promotes forest management that is environmentally sound, socially beneficial, and economically viable.

Meanwhile, PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) certification was launched in 1999 by forest owners, particularly in Europe, and is based on the recognition of national systems tailored to each country.

Requirements for obtaining Certification

To obtain forest certification—whether FSC or PEFC—it is necessary to meet a series of requirements that ensure sustainable forest management and product traceability.

Requirements for FSC Certification

Application of international standards adapted to the local context.

Independent audits conducted by accredited organizations.

Compliance with environmental, social, and economic criteria.

Monitoring and documentation of the chain of custody (CoC).

Requirements for PEFC certification

Application of national standards recognized by the PEFC system.

Assessment by accredited bodies.

Procedures that can be adapted to the size and type of property.

Records that ensure sustainability and traceability.

Benefits of each Certification

Benefits of FSC Certification

High international recognition.

Strict standards for sustainability and social responsibility.

Enhances the products’ eco-friendly image.

Benefits of PEFC Certification

Greater flexibility and adaptability to local conditions.

Extensive forest cover.

Particularly well-suited for large-scale industrial production.

In short, both FSC and PEFC certification play a key role in sustainable forest management and in ensuring the traceability of wood. The choice between the two will depend on each company’s approach and needs.

At Grupo Malasa, we hold FSC and PEFC certifications, which underscore our commitment to sustainability, responsible forest resource management, and traceability throughout all our production processes. You can learn more about our environmental policy and certifications in our Sustainability section.

Discover the interior design trends for 2026. We’ll show you which styles are gaining popularity, which timeless classics remain strong, and which design trends are fading away this year.

The latest interior design trends

Interior design in 2026 is moving towards warmer, more personal and welcoming spaces, leaving behind the extreme minimalism that has dominated recent years. Trending colours this year include earthy tones, soft greens and deeper shades such as olive green and anthracite grey, combined with natural materials like wood, linen and ceramics that add texture and authenticity.

Curved furniture shapes are becoming increasingly popular, alongside a strong presence of handcrafted and vintage elements. Contemporary interior design is focused on wellbeing, comfort and spaces adapted to everyday living.

Timeless classics still reign

Although trends evolve, several timeless elements continue to dominate interior design in 2026 because they are versatile, elegant and easy to adapt to modern styles.

In furniture design, personal and functional pieces such as comfortable sofas, solid wood tables and bespoke bookshelves remain essential, bringing both character and practicality into the home. Decorative architectural details are also continuing to thrive, including ceiling mouldings and wall panelling, classic elements that add personality and sophistication to any space.

Say goodbye to these interior design trends

In 2026, while some trends are rising, others are gradually losing popularity. Many of these outdated styles now feel too cold, impersonal or artificial for the kind of homes people want today.

As mentioned earlier, extreme minimalism and overly empty spaces are fading away because they no longer feel warm or inviting. Likewise, the excessive use of grey and cool tones is becoming less popular, as these colours can appear monotonous and emotionally flat.

Another style losing relevance is the “catalogue interior” look — homes that appear copied directly from a showroom without any personal touch. Current trends value authenticity, individuality and imperfect beauty much more.

How to adapt your home to the 2026 interior design trends

Adapting your home to the 2026 interior design trends does not require a complete renovation. Small and strategic changes can bring warmth, personality and a stronger connection with natural elements.

Simple updates such as replacing cool tones with earthy colours, soft greens or richer shades can completely transform a space. Painting a feature wall or changing textiles like cushions and curtains can make a significant difference. Incorporating natural materials through wooden side tables, linen fabrics or ceramic accessories is another effective way to update your home.

Adding personal or handcrafted decorative elements — such as photographs, artwork or handmade ceramics — also helps create a home with greater identity and character.

Interior design in 2026 is all about creating warm, natural and personal spaces where trends serve as inspiration rather than strict rules. The goal is to design a home that truly reflects who you are and where you genuinely feel comfortable. If you are looking for professional guidance to achieve this balance, our interior design studio can help you create the home you envision for 2026.

Are you familiar with industrialized housing? Unlike traditional construction, much or all of its construction is done in factories, like ours at Grupo Malasa, and then assembled at its final location. Many of these homes are modular and built with prefabricated elements, which significantly reduces time and waste. Furthermore, being manufactured in a controlled, weather-protected space increases their durability and quality.
