A new chapter for a historic building
Located on Carrer de Sant Pau, right in the heart of Barcelona, Hotel España Ocean Drive is housed in a building whose history dates back to 1859, when it opened its doors as Fonda España. In the early 20th century, it was renovated by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, who created some of the Modernist spaces that are still part of the hotel today.
In 2026, the hotel will embark on a new chapter as Hotel España Ocean Drive following a comprehensive renovation designed to harmonize this heritage with a new interior design concept.
At Grupo Malasa, we participated in this renovation by overseeing the development and manufacturing of the FF&E in spaces such as the lobby and reception area, the cocktail bar, the Sky Bar, the theater, and the various dining areas, working based on the interior design project by Lázaro Rosa-Violán Studio and Andrea Vergés of Grupo Ramat.

Wood plays a central role in much of the furniture, featuring curved, ornamental, and sculptural forms that are combined with other materials such as metal, glass, and various fabrics.
The development of these custom-made pieces required special attention to the finishes, shapes, and joints between the different materials. Each element was crafted with careful consideration of both the design concept for each room and the specific needs arising from its use within the hotel.
Our work spans spaces with very different characteristics—from dining and leisure areas to the lobby and reception—bringing the same level of detail to the various FF&E pieces developed for the project.
